Social responsibility review – 16 August

What’s coming up

Season of Creation – September

This month of reflection and action has been prioritised by the Queensland Synod as a key social responsibility event. All congregations and communities are invited to participate through prayer, action and advocacy.

The Synod of Victoria/Tasmania has an excellent series of resources for The Season of Creation, which runs from 1 September until St Francis of Assisi Day on 4 October. This includes worship resources, children’s addresses, practical earth ministry ideas and songs.

This international ecumenical website for Season of Creation is well worth a look when planning worship and prayer for the month of September. They have a very detailed Celebration Guide.

Multicultural month

Moderator of the Uniting Church in Queensland, Rev David Baker invites us to listen to the voices of the diverse cultures in your community during Multicultural Queensland Month. Read Moderator’s Musing from 13 August.

“Different from us”

Sean Winter, Head of Pilgrim Theological College in Melbourne, reflects on the experience of being white in our culture and the notion of difference. He reflects on his own experiences, and how the Uniting Church needs to be attentive “to questions of power, and the past and present realities of the racism that is endemic within and beyond the church.” This is an excellent article – challenging to each of us personally, as well as to our own communities.

Uluru Statement from the Heart – What is it?

In this compelling TED talk, Dean Parkin, Qandamooka man, stands with his ancestors to present the story of the Uluru Statement From the Heart. He was closely involved in its creation. He explains the process and his role in the development of the Statement from the Heart. This is well worth watching – and sharing widely.

At dinner with the Foreclaws

In this First Dog on the Moon (The Guardian) cartoon, we sit down with the Foreclaw family – Bechamel, her husband Tweed and their children Terrine and Trebuchet, as the conversation turns to the climate emergency. Biting humour

Call to action

Watch this!

The ABC aired this documentary recently – Climate Change: The Facts. Sir David Attenborough looks at a planet on the verge of climate catastrophe. With intimate stories of people’s lives affected by climate change, the documentary takes a look at one of the greatest challenges we face today. 58 minutes; this is well worth the effort.
