Historic links for Synod venue

Emmanuel College, Carrara
Graham Leo, a Uniting Church member and Principal of Emmanuel College venue for the 25th Synod, welcomed the Uniting Church to the school’s facilities. Acknowledging the traditional and past owners of the land Mr Leo welcomed the Uniting Church on behalf of the current owners.

Speaking at the start of Synod business on Saturday morning Mr Leo said that Emmanuel College was celebrating its 20 years anniversary ball that evening.

Mr Leo pointed Synod members to the school chapel. The chapel of the school is a small wooden building and one of the oldest public buildings on the Gold Coast.

It was given to the school as a gift by the Surfers Paradise Uniting Church when they moved to the Robina site.

The Q1 building now stands where the chapel once stood in Clifford Street, Surfers Paradise.

The chapel was also a centre for prayers during the Second World War and Mr Leo invited Synod members to visit the chapel which is open during the for prayer.

He said that he hoped the synod might have a productive time together

Newly inducted Moderator Rev Dr David Pitman thanked Mr Leo and the member of the Emmanuel College school staff for the use of the property, and all their support and assistance with the operation of the Synod.
