Book lovers will revel at the opportunity to spend 36 hours over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend hunting for books at the annual Lifeline Bookfest. With 1.5 million books on 4 kilometres of tables, this time around the Lifeline Bookfest is running Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 8am until 8pm.
Lifeline Brisbane Public Relations Manager Elissa Jenkins said it was a case of the early bird catching the bookworm. “Those in the know will be queuing at the doors of the Brisbane Convention Centre a little bit earlier this time, so don’t miss out on the best buys of the day.
“Keep in mind we restock our shelves every night, so each day of the Bookfest you’ll discover something not seen the day before.
“The extended hours mean that families can join in the fun at lunchtime and couples and groups of friends can dine in the evenings at Southbank and then duck across for some literary fulfilment.
“For those a little less book hungry, there will also be a selection of LPs, CDs, videos, magazines, soft toys, games and puzzles available,” she said.
The Lifeline Bookfest has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989 at the old Lifeline warehouse at Bowen Hills where the books were laid out across hay bales covered with blankets.
Now, Bookfest organisers are confident it is the world’s largest pre-loved book sale.
All proceeds from the Bookfest go towards Lifeline’s 24 hour 13 11 14 Crisis Counselling Line, free face-to-face counselling services and support programs for children and families. Bookfest will run over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from Saturday June 9 until Monday June 11 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre at South Brisbane.
