Coolum kids raise funds for a mad Summer

The Uniting Church’s Margaret Hall is supporting young members Billie, Aleisha and Alaina in their bid to raise fees for a Summer Madness camp. The girls are appealing for items to add to their garage sale to be held next weekend.
Billie Brooke, Alaina Yeates and Aleisha Brownie are no different than any other 13-year-olds that desperately want something. But these girls are more than willing to go out and get it themselves if they have to.

The girls have started a campaign to get them to the Uniting Church ‘Summer Madness’ camp at Alexandra Headlands in January.

Rather than asking their parents to cover the cost of accommodation and fees at a time of year when most families are recovering financially from the festive season, the Coolum Uniting Church youngsters will hold a garage sale next weekend to fund their trip.

They are asking for donations from the community of marketable items to add to their sale, which they are hoping will also aid teenage girls in India.

“We know our parents can’t afford to pay the $160 cost for each of us to go, so instead of giving up on the idea we thought we would try to find the money ourselves,” Aleisha said.

“If we make more money than we need to go to camp, we have arranged with the church to donate it to the school girls’ mission in India that they support.”

The ‘Ctrl-Alt-Delete’ Summer Madness program is a major state wide Uniting Church youth ministry experience, bringing together over 300 young people and their mentors for four days of spiritual growth and a whole heap of fun!

The garage sale will be at the Coolum Uniting Church, Elizabeth Street on Saturday 5 December, from 8am to 12 noon.

Goods can be dropped off at the church on Friday nights or Sunday – or arrangements can be made to pick larger items up. Call Margaret Hall on 5446 1493 for more details.
