Residents/staff safe and sheltering in Townsville evacuation centre

Residents and staff of Blue Care Townsville Garden Settlement Aged Care Facility at Pallarenda are safe and sheltering in the evacuation centre at Ignatius Park College.

Blue Care Residential Services Director Richard Olley said the Townsville City Council’s Disaster Management Team advised Blue Care to evacuate the facility this morning due to the threat of flooding.

“Since the early hours of this morning families were being contacted and residents have been safely and progressively moved to the evacuation centre,” Mr Olley said.

“All residents are doing well and are handling the situation magnificently.

“Blue Care staff and managers on the ground have done an impressive job, successfully implementing their emergency response plans and keeping communication lines open with residents, families and local authorities.

“As we brace ourselves for the impact of the cyclone, Blue Care’s focus remains on the wellbeing of residents and staff.”

Mr Olley said approximately 100 residents of the nursing home had been evacuated, along with people who live independently in the adjacent Blue Care Pallarenda Retirement Living Village.

Blue Care is making regular updates about facilities and services on Blue Care’s internet site www.bluecare.org.au.

Concerned relatives or family members of residents living in Blue Care aged care facilities can contact Blue Care’s Residential Admission Service on 1800 838 929.

Residents in Townsville have been on high alert since Sunday when the Queensland Government preemptively declared the area a disaster zone ahead of cyclones Anthony and Yasi.
