Reflections for Busy People: Making time for Ourselves, Jesus and God

Gerald O’Collins SJ
Paulist Press, 2009
RRP $24.95

Reviewed by Rev Dr Rob Brennan, who was, before ministry, a workaholic yuppie.

The title initially grabbed me as I have known the struggle of trying to maintain a relationship with God while you are working far too many hours in a job you find challenging and rewarding. Even now I find that people who live this kind of lifestyle are the hardest to minister to.

Fr O’Collin’s presents 48 spiritually reflective vignettes in a readable style.

Does he succeed? I’m not sure.

Maybe the title should read for “busy Catholics” as many of the examples refer to people not well known in our protestant traditions.

I found the book useful but probably wouldn’t recommend it for someone new in the faith.

For busy people? I’m not sure either.

If you are used to stopping and being reflective maybe.

However, most busy people I know would ask “so what?” to many of the reflections.

Nevertheless, there are some gems that I will be sharing with others.

Busy people making time for God? I have to agree having learnt the hard way – slow down! Your life and health and key relationships are too important.
