Workbook for Lectors,Gospel Readers, and Proclaimers of the Word. (2010 United States Edition)

Reviewed by Jan Bryde, a Lay Preacher, pastor and member of Tully Uniting Church .

The title of this book is perfect for what it is. Each Sundays readings for the Year are set out beginning withthe first Sunday of Advent 29 November 2009 through to 14 November 2010.

The readings are fully written from the New American Bible  with some words in bold for emphasis. Beside the reading there is an explaination of the mood of the reading eg. This is to be read in a quiet prayful manner, and a reason for the bold type. There might also be a particular sentence or two that need to be emphasised. A phonetic breakdown of some of the names that the reader may have difficulty with is provided. What a fantastic  help for anyone faced with those words and unsure of pronounciation.

Further to this  below each reading is an insight into each reading. This gives the reader more understanding of the setting ,who is speaking, what is happening etc. This information would be useful as a tool to the preacher /proclaimer as a starting point or provide motivation towards a sermon. At times the three readings are linked in the explainations in the insights so this too could be very useful.

I’m sure that all congregations would find this a very valuable resource for all of those people for whom the title recommends it.
