Minister closes a fine innings

HAVING announced his “retirement” 20 years ago, Reverend Aubrey Baker will officially bring his innings as a Uniting Church minister to a close tomorrow.

His final sermon at the 9am service at Lifeworks Uniting Church, Russell Street west, will bring down the curtain on an interesting and varied career of more than 50 years that has taken him across Queensland.

Rev Baker left the family dairy farm in Gayndah for religious studies in Brisbane in 1946, but it wasn’t long before his country preaching began.

“In those days students were expected to preach regularly,” Rev Baker explained.

“One day I was told to get on the rail motor and head west.

“I did the 9.30 service at Mt Tyson, the Pittsworth service at 11am, another at 2.30pm and back to Pittsworth for the 7.30 service.”
