Vale Max Christie

On 11th October, many of us were shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Max Christie.

Max was a vibrant member of Mossman Uniting Church, as well as a great contributor to the wider Church.

Above all, he was a faithful servant of his Lord Jesus Christ.

Born in 1938, as one of six children, Max’s parents were orchardists.

After accepting Christ at an early age, Max attended Sydney Missionary Bible College at the age of nineteen.

In 1959, he was appointed Assistant Minister to the Ingham Methodist Church.

There he met Val and they married in 1960.

He applied to become a probationary minister and was at Kilcoy for a short period of time, before coming to Mossman in1963.

Due to ill health, Max had to resign his position as Minister, but remained in Mossman.

There he turned his hand to farming, contract loading and hauling, and being a fuel agent.

Max gave his full drive to all endeavours he undertook.

He pioneered green cane harvesting and sub-surface tape irrigation.

He was also a member of the Mossman Cane growers’ Executive and also served on the Board of Directors for Town and Country Limited.

Max was a full on person whose passion was his faith, his family and his farm.

His four children (Neil, Narelle, Robyn and Scott) shared many special times fishing, attending Gymkhanas and water skiing.

Max was not a man of few words.

He had a strong character, a generous nature and a practical approach to life.

He had a wealth of “down to earth” wisdom, an ability to discern, a capacity to make opportunities out of problems.

Max was a man of deep faith and often spent time in prayer with God to gain wisdom in tackling situations.

Max was very generous with his time and resources.

He was a man of enthusiasm, evangelism and encouragement.

Above all, he was a man of God who married a strong woman of God.

Mossman Community and Mossman Church will miss him greatly, as will the Presbytery of North Queensland.

Our sympathies and prayers go to Val and the family at this time.
