The National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) Christian World Service (CWS) has launched an Emergency Appeal for Pakistan/Afghanistan Earthquake Victims.
NCCA CWS is coordinating the appeal with Action by Churches Together (ACT) International, its ecumenical partner for emergency responses.
ACT member, Church World Service-Pakistan/Afghanistan, is monitoring the situation there through its offices in Kabul and Jalalabad.
CWS-Pakistan/Aghanistan has already entered the response phase and is in close coordination with all the international and local organizations and authorities currently involved in responding in the affected areas. The CWS-Pakistan/Afghanistan offices in Karachi, Islamabad , Mansehra and Murree are organizing relief efforts to address the immediate needs on the ground.
CWS-Pakistan/Afghanistan has requested US$50,000 in Rapid Response Funds from the ACT Coordinating Office.
Its immediate plans are to assist 950 families by providing emergency food packages (including wheat flour, rice, pulses, cooking oil, sugar, tea leaves, salt and match boxes) in the most affected and remote areas of North West Frontier Province and Azad Kashmir.
CWS-Pakistan/Afghanistan is also planning to issue a proposal for an ACT appeal to assist 10,000 families with food and non-food items. In addition to emergency relief, the proposal will also include shelter construction materials.
The death toll stands currently at 20,000 and is still expected to rise. Thousands have been injured and according to a UN reports some 2.5 million people need shelter.
While Uniting Church Overseas Aid is not launching a separate appeal any donations received will be either distributed through our partner church, the Church of North India for assistance in their relief work, or will be made available for assistance in Pakistan through ACT.
All donations of $2 and over will be tax deductible. Contact them on their toll free number 1800 998 122 to make your donation by Visa, Mastercard or Bankcard.
