All in God’s time is the theme of the new Lenten exhibition at the Vera Wade Gallery in Brisbane by members of the Visionaries Christian artist network. Dianne Jensen reports.

The Vera Wade gallery at St Andrew’s Uniting Church presents the work of 15 Queensland artists who use a range of genres including gouache, mixed media, sculpture and photography to explore the concept of time through the lens of faith.
The artists include Kym Barrett, Lindsay Farrell, Jennii Gould, Teresa Jordan, Marion McConaghy, Dianne Minnaar, Gregg Nowell, Susan Pietsch, Kerry Reece, Tanya van Reijsen, Rita Ringma, Cees Sliedrecht, Cielle van Vuuren and Geraldine Wheeler.
“Each reflects in some way that God’s time and God’s way may not be the time or way of human choosing,” says Marion McConaghy, one of the convenors and an exhibitor.
“For some, the reflection on All in God’s time has led them to the events of Jesus’ life which are specifically remembered during Lent through to Easter. This is seen in Cees Sliedrecht’s Jesus Taken from the Cross in which he also pictures the reactions of the people around Jesus, and the ceramic bowls of Rita Ringma, reminding us of the vessels to carry the oils to embalm Jesus’ body brought by the women on the Sunday to the then-empty tomb.”

Some of the artists have drawn inspiration from Old and New Testament texts. Dianne Minnaar’s oil on canvas Gathering Stones was inspired by Ecclesiastes 3:5, “A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing”. She uses a combination of calligraphic script, strong form, textual layers and intense colour to convey “a deep sense of faith and hope in God’s perfect timing”.
Via Francigena – Camino from Canterbury to Rome, 2013, san Lorenzo to Ponticelli is one of a series by Lindsay Farrell based on the St Francis pilgrimage in Italy.
All in God’s time runs from 4 March until 25 April from 11 am to 2 pm, excluding public holidays.
