Albert Street celebrates 125 years

Hundreds of people have joined in worship, song, fun and laughter to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Albert Street Uniting Church.

As one of the most iconic and photographed landmark’s in Brisbane, the historic church has witnessed more than 25 000 worship services, 5000 christenings and 15 000 weddings, since it opened in November 1889.

To mark this significant milestone more than 170 people joined in special worship celebrating the sacred intent of marriage before a high tea in Wesley House with bridal dresses from every era, post 1920s. Ferny Hills couple Douglas and Evelyn Levingston, who were married at the church in 1947, said it was fantastic to attend the event.

“We met when we were 18 at a local dance at the Newmarket State School hall and we kept company three years before we were married,” says Douglas.

“We’re now both in our eighties and still living independently in a retirement village. We have five children, eight grand children and eight great grandchildren!”

The celebrations will continue at the church throughout the festive season. A highlight on the family calendar is the Christmas tree lighting party, where families come to get a great view of the giant tree lightening up in King George Square.
