Synod Scholarship Fund builds critical bridges

Mid-2018 has been focused on securing tax-deductibility for our donors and creating a public fund that will enable educational outcomes across our state.

The Uniting Church in Australia Queensland Synod Scholarship Fund was launched on 1 July 2018 to recognise student leadership in our local communities and to offer a critical bridge for those who lack opportunity.

Some of the scholarships envisioned from this fund include theological scholarships for tertiary students studying at Trinity College Queensland, residential scholarships for students from regional and rural Queensland studying in Brisbane and living at Raymont Residential College, and secondary school scholarships for high school students in Uniting Church schools.

The best part? Each charitable donation over $2 is fully tax-deductible in the same financial year and 100 per cent of your gift will find its way to your chosen cause.

For major donor Rodney Eivers of Sunnybank Hills, the Rodney Eivers Bursary and the Rodney Eivers Scholarship were ways to encourage the development of a greater awareness of the breadth and diversity in theology and scriptural scholarship as it relates to contemporary society.

“I wanted to support something meaningful to future generations and I wanted to give in the context of my own passions and commitment,” says Rodney.

For major donor Stuart Christ of Brookfield, the Christ Family Bursary for Christian Leadership was a stepping stone to empower leadership among Christian youth as well as enable students across regional and rural Queensland to study and live in Brisbane.

“Seeing young Christian leaders grow and inspire others is a passion for our family,” says Stuart. “This bursary is a small way towards achieving this goal.”

These bursaries are the first steps towards building critical bridges of opportunity, as we aim to level the playing field. In the future this fund needs to enable outcomes that are both life-changing and life-enhancing and cover a range of economic, geographical and social challenges faced by the next generation of leaders.

How can you, your local church or your local business support us in this mission? What other bursaries can we enable if you too advance the mission of education by setting up a scholarship in your name or in memory of a loved one?
