Gary Doyle announced as new General Secretary

Members of the 31st Synod have called Gary Doyle as the next General Secretary of the Queensland Synod.

Gary is currently principal of The John Flynn College, a residential college associated with the Uniting and Lutheran churches at James Cook University in Townsville. Also a member of Aitkenvale Uniting Church, Gary believes God has prepared him for the role of General Secretary.

“What you see is a product of the Creator, with all my faults and hopefully some positives,” he said. “I have experienced life from many perspectives: from competitive sport; many diverse workplaces; a loving family; a welcoming Church; and enduring friendships, that have allowed me to relate genuinely to people from all walks of life.”

He is passionate about working together with others and engaging young people in the church.

“To that end it is vital to put our best energy into renewal, revitalisation and discipleship,” he said.

The General Secretary selection panel said Gary’s mix of skills and experience is what the Synod requires at this time.

“Gary demonstrates a heart for people, a mature Christian character, competency as a proven leader and change agent with the capacity to achieve growth through collaboration,” the panel’s report said. “The panel found Gary to be humble, approachable and engaging―a person who seeks to deal openly and honestly with those he encounters. Gary brings a helpful, commercial approach which is tempered by a solid understanding of the church context.”

Gary will begin in the role of General Secretary in 2015.
