Letters to the Editor – Winter 2018

Letters to the editor graphic by Uniting Communications.

Debating the resurrection I was dismayed to read Dr John Frederick’s feature in the previous Journey (Autumn 2018 edition), especially if this is an example of the approach taken in the biblical education of candidates for the Ministry of the Word. A literalist approach is taken to the Easter story and this is overlaid with a materialistic interpretation. There are ...

Letters to the Editor – Autumn 2018

Does the Old Testament still apply today? I appreciated Dr Paul Jones’ article in November’s Journey and would like to add my bit. The Old Testament is needed today more than ever. The redemptive types and shadows which God gave Israel are the map or pattern which spells out the journey of the church as the cloud of the spirit ...

Cartoonification of Noah’s Ark I was shown a copy of the August edition of Journey. My attention was immediately aroused by the cover image for the very good reason that Creation Ministries International has just produced an article in our latest issue of Creation magazine that focused on the cartoonification of Noah’s Ark. It was sad to see the perpetuation ...

Fundamentalism and progressivism Last month’s Journey made me thankful for my Trinity Theological education once again. Lecturers like Rev Dr Geoff Thompson helped us navigate the extremes of Christianity exemplified by Ken Ham (fundamentalism) and Val Webb (progressivism). Both positions are responding to the same perceived problem. Both make the same mistake. Both bow to the idol of the enlightenment—science—mistakenly ...

Letters August 2016

Looking at the recent Journey (July 2016 edition) I am concerned at the apparent level of support for ‘feminist’ agendas. I have no problem with women seeking jobs but I wonder whether the headline should have read “Smashing the glass floor”. I feel there is such a pandering to status-seeking in feminist ‘conversation’ which does a disservice to the faith. ...

August 2016 Journey now available

August 2016 Journey masthead.

This edition brings profiles of two Christian Queenslanders who offer radically different perspectives on faith: Ken Ham (page 6) and Val Webb (page 10). While Val emphasises the importance of questioning in faith and brings an unmistakable progressivism to Christianity, Ken has an intense certainty in the Old Testament as literal history and is getting people around the world talking, ...

Letters June 2016

Disappointing that your excellent article on Julie McCrossin (June 2016 edition) brought in the denominational issue. Sydney Anglicans’ ideas are represented in one wing of our Uniting Church, while Rev Dorothy McRae-McMahon is represented on another. Those of us somewhere in the centre thank God for our Christian fellowship with both wings. I don’t have any worry about your excellent ...

Well done, Margaret Referring to your article in February Journey regarding 2016 Australia Day Awards recipients, I would like to advise that Mrs Margaret Buchanan was awarded the Ipswich City Council Senior Citizen Award for 2016. Margaret has been a church member since 1951. She has been involved with music programs for residents at Lauriston Nursing Centre from 1972, firstly ...

Super exemption call self-serving I was interested to read about Uniting Church ministers wanting to be exempt from the government’s changes to superannuation (“Not so super: Retirement incomes slashed”, February 2016, page five). What makes them think that they are alone in this? Many of us will be affected by the changes. Let’s all be exempt! This change is a measure ...

Palestine resolution It was reported in the Australian, (“Uniting Church in Australia faces backlash on anti-Israel boycott”, Tuesday 15 December, page 3) that the Uniting Church Assembly had decided to embrace the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement. Uniting Church president, Stuart McMillan, said the church had “encouraged members to be informed and to consider personally boycotting” goods produced “within ...
